About our Program
Our Program is a full time, 29 month long Master’s degree program that enables registered nurses to become Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Our degree is a Master of Science in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Anesthesia from Central Connecticut State University. The program is front-loaded with didactic foundational sciences courses at the university during the first 12 months. This is followed by the clinical phase offered at Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The Anesthesia faculty are provided by Hartford Anesthesiology Associates, and includes Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and Board Certified Anesthesiologists.
Initial applications are submitted to the Program Director at Hartford Hospital. The Program Director reviews the application for its merits and forwards all official transcripts to the Graduate Office at CCSU for their approval. Applications received by September 30th of each year will be considered for interview. Interviews are conducted in the fall and granted to individuals who meet all program requirements. Acceptance decisions are usually made by the end of November. We plan to accept a class of 12. Classes at the university begin in mid-May, and proceed through the summer, fall and spring semesters.
The following 17 months (clinical phase) are spent at our two clinical sites: Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children's Hospital. We anticipate that the average student will perform an average of 750 cases and 2560 clinical hours. During the first seven months of the clinical phase there is a full didactic class day each week. For the remaining ten months, there is one class day per month. There are scheduled clinical conferences and classes throughout the program.
